We chose the Mi-Fi Pro X 5G hotspot and have used it in the shop every day for the past year. Internet speeds are fast even when multiple devices are connected. We've not had any bandwidth issues. The device is well built, compact, and is very configurable. There is an on-device menu for the most common settings as well as a web-based administrative interface for in-depth configuration.
Battery Preservation Mode
At first it took some getting used to since it uses a proprietary battery preservation mode. This feature enables 24/7 charging without damaging the battery. When in preservation mode the battery will fully charge then deplete itself to about 78% and charge again. It repeats this cycle in order to preserve battery life. If the charging cable is disconnected, the device will discharge the battery until it reaches 10% and notify you through audible tones that it needs recharging.
Sleep Mode
One odd behavior was random network outages. This was due to the Sleep Mode setting. The default setting is for the device to enter sleep mode if it does not sense network activity after a set number of minutes. However, we noticed the Mi-Fi Pro X would put itself to sleep even when we were connected to the network and working on a computer or mobile device. We would randomly lose internet connection and have to troubleshoot. You can imagine the annoyance. So after some experimentation, the solution was to set sleep mode to Never sleep.
1 Gbps Ethernet Port
The Mi-Fi Pro X 5G hotspot includes a 1 Gbps Ethernet port for wired connection to devices. We decided to connect the shop router, Linksys WRT 3200ACM, which is connected to multiple servers, printers, and test units. The Mi-Fi has no issues routing data packets to all our shop equipment. So if you think this device won't provide consistent internet service in a business environment, think again. It may not be suited for enterprise-level environment, but for small businesses, it handles network traffic well.
Overall, the Mi-Fi Pro X 5G hotspot has performed extremely well. After using it for a year, I can honestly say it has been one of the best decisions we made.
